Pompeii’s House of Venus in a Seashell (Region II, Insula 3). This was once a standard atrium house but the tablinum was removed to allow greater emphasis on the peristyle. The main feature of the house is its paintings, climaxing in the lurid mural of Venus lounging in a seashell on the south wall of the peristyle.

This is Pompeii’s House of the Cithara Player or Lyre Player (Region I, Insula 4). it’s at the corner of what was, and still is, Pompeii’s busiest crossroads where the main north-south and east-west roads meet. It was excavated in the mid-1800s and stripped of all its paintings and contents, leaving it a shadow of its former self and exposing it to steady deterioration. It’s an extremely large house, built on separate levels and combined what had once been several different houses. By the time of the eruption in AD 79 75% of the insula was just one house.
