Houses of Julius Polybius and the Chaste Lovers

The two houses that form the focus of the Commissioner’s new “Pompei Viva” campaign will be open on a regular basis to visits from 1 June it has been announced. More info here.

Perhaps blog contributers would like to discuss the houses if they’ve visited them – they are certainly causing a lot of debate both positive and negative. Anyone had the chance to visit yet on one of the pre-opening events? If no one wants to comment, I’ll feel obliged to get the ball rolling myself:) – after all you all said on the survey that you’d like more discussion….

Query: fresco of a blind man with dog?

I’m posting a query on behalf of Joanne Briggs, in the hope that someone might be able to help her identify a fresco of a blind man with a dog (or at least a fresco that may in the past have been interpreted as such):

“Perhaps the source I have used is referring more to paintings in Pompeii than in Herculaneum. I will give you the source utilized, and the quote, and if you can shed further light on this I would be most appreciative. The book is entitled “The Buried Cities of Vesuvius: Herculaneum and Pompeii” published in 1895 by Hazell, Watson and Viney, Id. London. The author is John Fletcher Horne. The quote concerns the typology of Pompeian paintings and one in particular that depicts “a blind beggar being led by a dog and asking alms of a lady.”

Children’s pack: Ancient Rome

EXPERT+ROME Slipcase Childrens pack: Ancient Rome
The new DK Eyewitness Expert Guide to “Ancient Rome” has just been published in the US (the UK will have to wait until winter for a later release).

It is just the sort of pack that I’d have wanted as a child: books, models, maps, fact cards and a CD of clipart. I mention it on this blog because one of the books has a section on Herculaneum thanks to a contribution by the Herculaneum Conservation Project. I’ve added some sample page layouts below.
